Course Description: 

Mandatory/Elective for Mundus MAPP students ( Students must complete this or the Internship in fulfillment of the mandatory practice component)

The Policy Lab is the mandatory practice component for the Mundus MAPP program and alternative option for the internship for Mundus MAPP students who are spending their entire year in Budapest, Hungary. One-year MAPP students may also register for the Policy Lab, considering there is available space. The Policy Lab spans over two terms – staring in the Fall term of AY 2019 with the finished product to be submitted by the end of the Winter term. During these two terms students will work on a policy research problem for an external client. The purpose of the Policy Lab is to provide a real-life consultancy experience for students who wish to pursue a career in public policy, development, political advocacy and similar areas. The Policy Lab consists of groups up to 4 students, each group working with an individual client. Groups will be assigned to a faculty member to provide guidance and feedback on the specific project. The Policy Lab will be overseen by the Policy Lab Director and coordinated by the Skills and Applied Learning Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes: 
  • Work together in teams with attendant role allocation and problem solving
  • Plan a research project in close collaboration with external client with clear objectives and outputs
  • Implement work in efficient and effective manner taking into account other responsibilities 
  • Learn how to creatively present interim findings for consideration and discussion
  • Learn how to organise stakeholder consultations and develop policy recommendations;
  • Learn how to produce different genres of reporting, taking into account final use and audience
Assessment: 

Group grade will be allocated.  This will be decided by the course leader in close co-operation with the mentor and the client.  It will focus particularly on the quality of project design, the ability to implement in an effective and efficient way, the delivery of the interim presentation and the quality of the final written report.  In addition, marks will be allocated for the quality and strength of the team work, including internal problem solving and ability to adapt to changes in the client's circumstances.
