Course Description: 

This course aims to develop an understanding of the basic concepts, principles and laws of ecology and the functioning of ecosystems.  Further, it is meant to help bridge competencies for students who have had little or no background in natural sciences, particularly in ecology.

Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of the course a successful student should be able to:

  • understand basic concepts, principles and laws of ecology;
  • understand general characteristics of the world's 'biomes';
  • understand ecological processes including the flow of energy, and materials in ecosystems;
  • understand the basic processes in adaptation among organisms;
  • grasp the foundational principles of population and community structures and development.
Assessment: 

Assessment will consist of reflection blogs (40%) and a final 'biome' assignment (60%)
