Course Description: 

The course will be based on a close reading of parts of the Philosophical Investigations and some other late work by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Among other things, we shall discuss the sections on rule following. If possible, I shall try to adjust the reading material to students’ interests. In the process, we shall learn how to read the Investigations, this exceptionally influential as well as challenging philosophical text of the twentieth century.

Learning Outcomes: 

A better informed and critical approach to questions in philosophy in the areas discussed, and to philosophical methodology more generally.

Assessment: 

Term paper of approximately 2500 words, preferably interpreting passages from Wittgenstein’s writings. Students should consult the instructor about the paper’s subject. Participation in class can contribute up to plus one grade (from B to B+ etc.) to the final grade.
