Course Description:

This course is an interdisciplinary introduction into the practice of global history, helping to go beyond the Euro-centric understanding of human culture and society. It analyses a number of nodal points such as transcontinental mobility and transfers, colonialism and decolonization, as well as global economic and political structures and institutions in the past and the present. Besides the historical investigation, students will thus engage also with contemporary developments.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze the political implications of different transnational and global historical interpretative frameworks;
  • Understand research terminology and develop a familiarity with various conceptual frameworks relevant for global history;
  • Analyze social and political phenomena from a transnational and global perspective;
  • Link the historical discussions to other disciplinary contexts (such as sociology, anthropology, political science or gender studies) and see their mutual entanglement;
  • Read, interpret, and critically evaluate transnational and global historical literature.
