Course Description:

The course explores philosophical questions raised by Greek tragedy. The goal is to gain an understanding of Greek tragedy both as an art form in its historical context and as a source of metaphysical, psychological, ethical, and political insights that also address human concerns in the 21st century. We will closely read and discuss Oedipus Rex, Antigone, Prometheus Bound, and Medea and accounts of Greek tragedy by Plato, Aristotle, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Bernard Williams.
