Course Description:

This is the title of this course but also the answer to the question: Why couldn’t Mozart and Beethoven find their teacher? During this first term we will learn how to listen to music creatively by playing “seek and Haydn”. We will let Joseph Haydn, the father of all Viennese Composers to guide us not only through his own private Vienna (and its surroundings) but also through the entire history (and theory) of music. We will visit the house where he was born, the house where he died, the church in which he was serving as an organist and the church where he is buried, the noble palaces where he served as a court composer and performer. We will also spend an evening at the opera, attend a symphonic concert and invite some musicians, a string quartet and a singer to perform for us and also explain what is going on in their brains during a performance.
