Course Description: 

This interdisciplinary seminar is the culmination of the first “What” year of CPS. Reflecting the inter-disciplinary nature of the program, students read texts from a variety of disciplines, sources, and methods, and access multi-media materials, to understand the extensive political, cultural, and social layering of the city of Vienna and its environs. The seminar relates between interdisciplinary themes such as imperialism, nationalism, cultural heritage, the post-war order, immigration, urban development, gentrification, global capitalism, gender and space, management of nature and space, and levels of governance.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of the course, students will:

1. Understand the extensive political, cultural, and social layering of the city of Vienna and its environs;

2. Distinguish between different disciplinary approaches to studying the city, space, and the natural and built environment;

3.Relate their environment to material studied throughout the Academic Year, and course readings;

4.Critically assess public discourse about the city and urban development;

5. Place local space, culture, politics, and society within global processes.
