Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Economics
Program Description

The BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) degree program provides an education in the core elements of philosophy, politics, and economics. Students begin by studying the basics of all three subjects in the first year, and then, in their second year, they choose two academic disciplines to focus on. In their third year, they continue with the study of their two main disciplines, may choose to study abroad for a term or the entire year, and are required to write a thesis. In their fourth year, students continue to develop their skills and knowledge by taking advanced courses in their chosen discipline and developing an independent capstone project. In their second and third years, they can also complement their main study areas by taking courses from the other two BA programs: Culture, Politics and Society, and Quantitative Social Sciences.

The PPE program is multi-disciplinary — students receive thorough training in at least two of the three PPE disciplines. They can also undertake interdisciplinary work in their BA thesis and capstone project, and take courses from outside the PPE framework that can offer contrasting or more interdisciplinary perspectives on the topics they are interested in.

Admission is based on the individual qualities of each student. The program is looking for applicants with a high school education who can demonstrate intellectual curiosity, analytical thinking, and a proactive and problem-solving orientation. Interest in critical thinking, interdisciplinary perspectives, and global processes will be highly valued, as well as an interest in civic engagement.
